Archetype of the Protagonist

In order make a successful story, the audience must sense the protagonist of your story.

From the early childhood, a concept about protagonist has been drawn in our imagination. In childhood, A potential protagonist is either a knight in shining armor or the angle in a fairy.

You cannot have an effective protagonist who simply responds to events happening around him or her. Your protagonist must act, not just react.
— Rachelle Gardner

But as we grow, the protagonist like prince, angel etc. Become so unrealistic because of lack of challenges inside the character.

Now, we grow little older, and the character arc we found as the hero didn’t match with us at all. Because the thing that places you, yourself as the protagonist in a movie matter the most at that moment.

At every point in a story, we looking for the desire of a hero as your own personal desire. If the desire you are looking for is so easy to complete, there will be no adventure in the tale. So as protagonist grows in a story, we grow with him.

The character arc of protagonist reflects one of the elements that everyone in the audience has – “uniqueness”.

Based on many characteristics, we have found most important element we find in a protagonist that makes us fall in love with him.
We can conquer all the difficulties while creating character arc for the protagonist if we expertise in these elements.

The Character and Archetype – the protagonist

  • Attitude

The hero’s attitude is the attitude of everyone sitting in the audience. At one point, everyone sees himself as a hero and make it personal. And believe me, the story won’t be succeeded unless the audience makes it personal. So attitude matters the most to make it personal.
The attitude of the characters towards the society, people’s and the normal world should be very clear and genuine in spite of things he does.
In many featured film, 3 psychological factors change with respect to a plot.
These factors in order to make this change possible are most important and should be exercised very carefully.
These are – thinking, emotions and intellect.

Example –
1) The protagonist hates the world as the sequential crime in his city raised.
2) The protagonist refuses to make a change or refuse to serve humanity.
3) Realizes that he can make a difference in order to get the piece or found the real happiness of being a hero. And save the world.

And here it is, the story is driven by 3 psychological factors – emotions, intellectual and thinking and at last attitude changes.
This change in attitude is nothing more than the change in thinking, emotions, and level of understanding or the intellectual.

  • Battlefield of Minds

Let me give you a quick demo,

E. g. 1
She has two choices, either accept him as he was, as he was broken completely due to a financial loss at the moment, or shut the f**k up and get Rid of her relationship to free her and she chooses the second one.
E. g. 2
She has two choices, either accept as he was, or get rid of her relationship because of trouble she is going through, but she never did because of a fear that she can’t make it on her own.

In both examples above the plot set a battlefield in characters mind in order to keep the suspense. The conclusion of bot plot is the destruction of the normal world of the character.
A genuine character always has two minds. If We name it as a positive and a negative one. There is always a battle between two minds to overcome each other. A mindset and mind battle creates a conflict in our story.
In every feature film, the hero has a right to choose between good or bad. And the consequences of good are explained in the plot. In order to maintain the suspense and curiosity – in the first phase of the story, the protagonist forced to choose the bad which create an extremely difficult situation for him. And here it started,The destruction of the Normal world of a character.

  • A soft corner

This is something that makes him the protagonist. Because in spite of all the action he is doing, his soft corner pops again and again. This is one of the things about ‘why we love the protagonist? ‘

To explain a changed mindset of a character, it’s necessary to show a soft corner for something in rising action of a story.
In the stories and movies, these soft corners are either the Presented As greatest Secrets or weakness of the characters. By the time the character reveal, it’s soft corner the lie he beloved in start slapping.

  • Sense of humor

Difference between the passive and active character is explained by the sense of humor.

An active protagonist develops the sense of humor as the story grow. It’s really necessary, as the story progresses through these changes.
But in case of the passive protagonist, the sense of humor is already inbuilt but he isn’t able to use his sense to complete his desire.

  • Dynamic power inside the character

It is a strong belief that a protagonist always has something special that he never knew he has. No matter what special is revealed in the story or not.

It can be the grit that separates you from the subplot characters. It’s not necessary that the protagonist is always a leader. But at the times he can be.

Primarily the dynamic power inside the character is shown in early stages of movies.
Example. How to train your dragon: They have set a plot where only one who can ride the dragon no one has ridden over the years can be the leader. And the protagonist finally achieves the target. It’s the dynamic power of the character.

  • Dare of The Protagonist

Dare to be a protagonist, dare to be wise, dare to struggle and dare to be a pain, dare to fall and wake up again. Dare to be ashamed of, dare to fight and lastly dare to survive.

Everything in the life of a genuine protagonist based on the dare he has. Everything he achieves with this dare.

  • Soul

Soul, it’s something separates one character from all the others. There can be more than one protagonist in the story, equally competent, equally strong but something about one character is really different from others. That is the soul. In theory of human psyche, Carl described the archetype in three parts, the ego, the soul, and the self. Alexa belongs to the soul at first and when she took a decision she turned into an archetype – The Ego.

It’s story of Alexa, who turned in her 19 recently. She was pretty smart and beautiful, but everyone in her class hates her because she was way more attractive than anyone else. She was innocent until a guy tries to grab her a** in front of everyone. She lost everything she believes about the world that day. She has to be strong enough. Strong enough to conquer all of them. And she took a decision.
The story about Alexa, reflect an innocent soul in spite of her intentions afterward. What decision you have taken, if you were at the place of Alexa?

The soul raises a question, about your concerned behavior and helps you take it personally.
